sunrisescholar: (Grad Students)
By this time next week, I will be 95% done with my semester.  And my graduate coursework with just the thesis left.  By this time next week, my brain will have liquefied and run out of my ears.  By this time next week, I will be exhausted from all of the DANCES OF JOY I will have done.

To get to the dancing part, I have the following left to get done:

Read State of Denial and write a review of it (2 pages) -- Thursday  (Edit: DAMN, this is a long book!)
Write my last short Chinese women paper (5 pages)
Read Their Greatest Battle and write short critique of it and 2 other books (5-7 pages)
Research and write BIG paper for Chinese women class (15 pages) -- hey, apparently only the presentation is due Wednesday.  Paper's not due until next week!
Grade student formal papers -- nightly
Do lesson plan for next week -- Tuesday

I'm making this list because I get crazy-happy at crossing things off and you all can join in my glee.  : )

Every time they find something like this I get just a little bit closer to being cured.  This just reinforces my feeling that this is what caused my Crohn's.

So, YAY!

And, in the spirit of Spring Break, it's bedtime.

So I was realizing today that I have a crapload of work to get done before Tuesday and needed to make a 'To Do' list.  (What's that you say, Jim?  You say 'To Do' lists really work and I was right?  ;) )

Anyhow, here it is:

Travel funding proposal (due tomorrow)  Revise funding proposal -- *sigh*
IDs for exam key (due tomorrow A.M.)
Return student emails (by tomorrow night)
Read Ginormous Book/prep discussion questions (due Tuesday morning)
Revise prospectus
Email Kapree with questions
Write panel proposal (due Monday morning)
Watch videos for 780 from last week (Tuesday night)
Write paper for Chinese women class (due Wednesday afternoon)
Readings for Chinese women class (Tuesday night)
Prep Enlightenment/Women's rights lesson plan
Grade at least 25 exams (due Tuesday morning)
Schedule make-up exams

I think I've forgotten something.  :(

I haven't posted much lately -- I've been getting ready for next semester and I just generally haven't felt very communicative lately -- but here's an update:

It was a good Christmas, a little rushed, but still good.  Last night I watched Little Miss Sunshine.  Good movie, but it made me cry in spots.  For the record, Steve Carrell is brilliant.  My sister and I also saw Night at the Museum -- I give it a B-/C+.  There were parts that were good, but more spots where they really dropped the ball on the story.  Next movie I'm seeing is The Good Shepherd.  It's actually about my thesis topic.  Always nice to have a little inspiration.

Today was pretty productive cleaning-wise.  Looking at the pile of dvds on the floor, I'm realizing how badly I need media storage.  Ah, well, you all know how much I enjoy organizing gadgets.  Sounds like a job for my label maker!  Oh, and I hit my head while moving some box springs today so I'm a little bit bruised and headache-y.  I also signed up for a multitude of professional/historical organizatiions.  I'm now a member of: The OSU Alumni Association, the Ohio Historical Society, the American Historical Association, and the American Library Association.  Still toying with joining the Society of American Archivists.  It might be more well-rounded to join a different type of group.  :)

I'm doing the usual New Year's life reassessment and, surprisingly, I'm relatively happy, although my list of things to do this year is still pretty long.

My classes start Monday ,and I'm torn between enjoying my time off and wanting this portion of the program done.  The classes look pretty interesting too.  We'll see how the teaching goes.  :)

Anyhow, that's all for now.  Sorry to everyone I haven't contacted -- I swear, I'll return your emails soon.  When I'm not quite so tired.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

It's 5am and I'm done with my work that's due tomorrow.

Now I just have to post grades and finish my proposal.

So, late Sunday night I suddenly realized that the semester ends on Dec. 8 and, while experiencing something that can only be described as "glee", I also had one of those "OH SHIT" moments. I have a lot of work to do in a very short amount of time, plus there are conference proposals due Friday. Now I don't *have* to submit for this year, but it might be fun and would look good on my CV. That said, I'm not entirely sure how much sanity I want to sacrifice in the process.

There is at least one other project with a later deadline so that might be a better option, but we'll see.

Expect much stressing and me asking opinions about my thesis in the next week and a half! Oh, and did I mention that I only have a week and a half left of leaving for school at 5am!

*HAPPY DANCE*

Bush urges patience on winning Iraq war

...Asked if the experience in Vietnam offered lessons for Iraq, Bush said, "We tend to want there to be instant success in the world, and the task in Iraq is going to take awhile."

He said "it's just going to take a long period of time" for "an ideology of freedom to overcome an ideology of hate. Yet, the world that we live in today is one where they want things to happen immediately."

"We'll succeed unless we quit," the president said.

That's the lesson of Vietnam? I mean, he didn't actually go so I suppose it's not surprising that he doesn't get it but, geez, read a book.

This whole election business is making me so nervous.  I've never understood how the networks can predict a winner based on 1% of the precincts reporting.

ETA:  Holy sh*t, Allen County went blue!!!  With 3% Independent!!!

ETA: Ah, dammit, I celebrated too soon, but yay Dems!!!

I just realized that there are only six weeks left in the semester -- and I think I'm having a minor anxiety attack.

All my independent study work has to be done by Nov. 17 so I can start doing the primary source work.  If I don't, there's no way I'll get the thesis proposal reviewed by my committee and submitted by the end of the semester.  November 17 is also the day that I may be flying to Milwaukee for an orientation, which is a big part of why I chose it as a deadline.  The following week is vacation and that will be the best time to do any archive hopping, although I might try to work Dayton into the schedule sooner.

Of course, I have midterms to grade this weekend and make-up exams to give next week, so two sets of tests to grade.

I have .. umm... 15 books left (or 5 subject groups).  It's doable, but it's not helping my headache any.

Well, Bob Barker is retiring.  I have no idea what my grandpa is going to do now that Bob won't be on in the morning.

My favorite line of the article?  "He said he'd take on a movie role if the right one came along, but filmmakers, take note: 'I refuse to do nude scenes. These Hollywood producers want to capitalize on my obvious sexuality, but I don't want to be just another beautiful body."'

Oh, Bob.  :)

Ugh

I am terrible at talking to people on the phone.

Called the former DIA agent today to set up an interview and ummm-ed my way through a message on her voice mail.  I'm sure she's a very nice person, but I get so freaked out by, you know, interacting with humans (*eye roll*).

Hopefully, our conversation will go better.

Okay, so I'm starting to realize just how little time I have left in the semester and how much more I have to accomplish before it's over.

I suspect a decent part of this post is going to be me talking to myself, but I welcome any and all help you can give me.  After getting some help on how to format my thesis proposal (priority #1 for the term), I've come up with the following game plan:

ETA:  Maybe I need to figure out what questions I'm attempting to answer.  Any others I'm not considering?

Ugh.

I feel like I'm getting buried by my research.  There's *so* much and people have been so helpful.  I'm not complaining about all the resources -- they're fantastic-- but there's so much I don't know and I wonder how I'll ever get caught up.

Now I have someone I need to interview and it's so exciting, but I don't know how I'm going to be academically prepared to ask her the right questions.

So I'm frustrated.
