I was worried the kittens would be afraid of the ukulele, so since I got them I’ve taken to strumming it very softly for short amounts of time. They didn’t seem scared or bothered, so in the last few days I’ve been playing full songs.

So far, Polk is indifferent; she doesn’t seem to notice the music, she just wanders around like normal. Dearborn doesn’t seem to especially like the music, but if she’s in the room when I start playing, she’ll sit very primly on the coffee table and watch me play like she’s trying to figure it out.

Except for Willie Nelson. They both really like Willie Nelson. Which I suppose shows pretty good taste, for cats.

The Side Gig ™ is really bringing the joy this morning, you guys.

I’m always ambivalent about this gig (audio transcription) because it doesn’t really pay that well; it takes some hustle on the front end and you earn between $4 and $10 an hour but it’s very irregular, and man there are a lot of con men wanting their audio transcribed.

But even if I could stop I’m not sure I would because the most amazing shit passes through my ears. This morning I transcribed several letters from an attorney to various parties in a case surrounding the employee of an exotic dance bar who was injured on the job (OR WAS HE? Apparently there is ambiguous video suggesting he was not).

It’s not just that it’s a workplace injury case surrounding exotic dancing, though. That’s practically mundane in the audio transcription world. It’s that the owners of the bar have given the lawyer a $25K budget to spend on compensation, and she’s offering the injured party three grand, and definitely not more than five grand. Listening to the earnest tone of her voice when she insists that’s as high as the owners of the bar can go was amazing.

Also, I don’t know how lawyers in particular dictate letters like this. They very rarely even pause. I’m lucky if I can read my own notes aloud coherently, let alone draft letters about injury compensation straight from my brain into a tape recorder.

Also also, last week I transcribed an interview with a woman who said her secret gift was that she could sing, and then she sang and it was like a seagull dying, and the interviewer said “Well, my god, that was something.”

Dad can’t get mad at you for eating people food if you land in his sandwich and then lick the tomato sauce off your paws. He’s mad at you for jumping up and landing in his sandwich, which is a totally different category of mad!

You can read more at their Dreamwidth, including PayPal and Ko-Fi links, or support them here at Patreon.

[profile] chrysos_beryllos linked to a fundraiser for Nina, a goat farmer in New York whose husband was diagnosed with aggressive cancer earlier this year; he passed away this past week, leaving her and his daughters with medical and funeral bills to cover. You can read more and share at their Facebook, buy soap at their shop, or give at their GoFundMe here.

[tumblr.com profile] miss-ingno linked to the LEAF fund, to help represent Unaccompanied Immigrant Children (who are otherwise apparently expected to represent themselves) in immigrant court. Twitch user JaceyChase is raising funds for LEAF through July 17th, with donation rewards including custom emotes and coloring pages. You can read more about the fundraiser here, and if you give through the Streamlabs Link here you are eligible for rewards, plus they are matching up to $100 of all donations. Other resources for supporting separated immigrant children can be found here.

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

[tumblr.com profile] warlockwriter linked to a fundraiser for writer Brian Keene, who was recently in an accident and suffered severe burns. He has no health insurance, and his medical bills may top $300K. You can read more and support the fundraiser here.

[tumblr.com profile] jedilora linked to a fundraiser for friends Julie and Jay, whose daughter was born two months early, after being told at 18 weeks that there was almost no chance of survival. The doctors are now cautiously optimistic, but they're in for a long hall at NICU and facing a lot of copays and other medical bills. You can read more and support the fundraiser here.

[personal profile] kshandra linked to a fundraiser for Kaerla, who was in the midst of preparing for an out-of-state move with partner Darrin when he passed away unexpectedly. Their house has already been sold, and she's had to arrange for temporary housing for herself and their cats, but funds to cover the final expenses and a more permanent place of residence for Kaerla will be vital. You can read more and support Kaerla here; Kshandra also linked to Aging With Dignity's Five Wishes page, about changing how we talk about end of life. Kaerla had been with Darrin for 14 years but they weren't married, so next-of-kin decisions were not in her hands.

M linked to a fundraiser for Leanne Warr, who is crowdfunding for her new book on depression, Pathways Out of Depression. She'd underemployed in New Zealand and the funds will help her with research for the book as well as supporting the writing, publishing, and advertising for it. You can read more and support the fundraiser here.

THE MIGHTIEST HUNTER

Oh shit, you guys

I was hanging my tent over the shower rod to dry out, since I had to pack it away wet, and the kittens were in the bathroom because anything to do with the shower curtain is automatically Of Interest To Them. As I was draping the tent over the pole a fucking GIANT SPIDER slithered out of it, apparently he’d hitched a ride, which is probably why my backpack felt heavier going back.

This spider walked like a man. He was a tarantula junior, and while I understand that spiders are a vital part of our ecosystem and more afraid of me than I am of them, I still was not down with having to charge him rent for sharing the condo, he was that big. (Also I’m well aware he was probably a she and I don’t want to be dad to a thousand spider babies.)

So while I was casting around for something large enough to murder the spider with, up pops Dearborn, who watches this monster drop into the tub, leaps in, pounces, and

cronch cronch cronch

WHAT A GOOD KITTEN. THE VERY BEST KITTEN. SHE ATE A SPIDER HALF HER OWN BODY WEIGHT. SUCH A GOOD KITTEN.

And I don’t even have to give her a treat! She already had one! IT WAS THE SPIDER!

OH MAN you guys I just realized, I’m going camping tomorrow, that means

NEW DIANE MOTT DAVIDSON BOOK.

She writes super corny, fun, ridiculous murder mysteries themed on food (the protagonist is a caterer) and I only ever allow myself to read them when I go camping, since that’s where I discovered them.

There are seventeen of them and I started with book two; I’m now on book four, THE LAST SUPPERS, and all I know about it is that she’s supposedly getting married in it. (I’m saving book one for last.)

I’m gonna make a fire with doritos and go hiking and read a murder mystery and cook freeze-dried spaghetti on my new camp stove!
